The Bermuda Triangle Mystery

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

The Bermuda Triangle is an area, in the shape of a triangle, that is where the Caribbean Sea meets with the Atlantic Ocean. The Western point of the triangle meets with the Southern Florida coast then North East to the Island of Bermuda and due south to Puerto Rico and back to Florida. The first person to write an article about this was E.V.W. Jones in September16th 1950 this was followed by George Sands who was covering the loss of several planes and ships in the area including flight 19, a group of U.S. Navy bombers that went missing on December 5th 1945.Vincent Gaddis coined the title of The Deadly Bermuda Triangle, the second half of this title has been used ever since. The word deadly certainly seemed too aply to this area of the ocean and some of the diappearances were made the subject of all sorts of events even aliens were reported to have taken some of the missing vessels.

What is the mystery of this area of the sea? Lawrance David Kusche, a research librarian of the Arizona State University seemed to have the answer. He trolled through the reports of the disasters occurring in that area and eventually published a paper entitled The Bermuda Triangle Mystery: Solved in 1975. He found that there was a large number of inaccuracies in the reporting of these disasters due to the popularity of the mystery, it may have been profitable to not disclose the full facts. Kuscke’s conclusion

Kuscke’s concluded the number of ships and planes missing in the area was not significantly greater on average than any other part of the ocean. In an area frequented by tropical storms the number of disappearances was not mysterious. Some research led to exaggeration, and some events did not happen. Lloyds of London stated that a large number of the ships reported missing, in that area, had not sunk there. This would have us believe that the Bermuda triangle is not so deadly could this be down to reporters invention?

So it appears, the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle was the result of bad reporting by the investigators, or their inaccurate reports and, the poetic license of the press. Has the romance of the mystery surrounding that area been killed, possibly not as these reputations are hard to destroy, if for no other reason than the public does enjoy a good mystery. We read in the press of the French Airliner that went missing outside of this area but this did not stop some reference to the Bermuda Triangle being made. Although the legend is still with us, in a small way, the wilder associations of aliens, I think, has died.

Online Schooling Classes

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Now as you will know, online classes work by providing complete instruction via the internet. Look through the schedule of courses for ones offered as distance learning classes. Read the computer requirements listed on most online classes’ main page before you enroll for the class. You may consider upgrading your computer, or buying necessary equipment such as speakers or a microphone, if the online class requires it. Most students can enroll with just their ordinary computer.

Once enrolled, browse around the class site to familiarize yourself with the setup. Many online classes utilize WebCT and Blackboard. These are computer applications that provide a platform for syllabus information, grades and other resources. Students also can use these applications to post assignments and questions. These discussion boards can be used as part of your class participation grade. There may be posting requirements for students stating that they need to post at least one comment for each topic on the board. Depending on the class, there may be a requirement that every student must start at least one topic for discussion. Other ways of communication include email, chat boards and phone calls if needed.

Many classes will use your social security number as your student I.D. This is the number your grades and teacher comments will be posted under and gives you some degree of confidentiality. Others may give you an assigned password or name for posting, submitting and checking grades. Regarding assessment, tests and quizzes are often online and some may be timed. Open book tests usually give you enough time to finish as long as you know the majority of the course work.

Practice with computer technology before beginning. There are some basic programs and applications that many online classes use. To begin with, you should be able to use a word processing program. This includes knowing how to email saved documents, zipping files, changing margins and fonts and adding charts and tables and some classes may need you to be familiar with spreadsheets or slideshow type presentations. You may also want to practice downloading and uploading files, and take the time to set them up in an orderly way. One important tip before you start your online live classes: If you needed to buy a microphone, make sure you hook it up and test it out before your class starts.

Easy Ways to Learn Spanish

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Learning something new can really take time. It may be a new hobby, a new instrument or even a new language you want to learn. It is certainly not an easy thing to learn a new skill because it requires much time and effort. Although some people learn things faster than others, getting good advice and training can certainly help you ‘get’ a new language faster.

There are many reasons for you to learn the Spanish language, both personal and professional. Languages vary all over the world and it is good if you can speak more than one. Happily, Spanish is not as hard as some languages. In fact, many people claim that learning Spanish is actually pretty easy. Here are some quick tips:

Every second counts. Don’t waste any time! Practicing the language on a regular basis will get your tongue and mind used to speaking and thinking Spanish. Whatever you do, get yourself speaking the language. You can practice even if you are walking, exercising, doing the laundry, or having a coffee break. Those quick practice sessions will surely make a difference.

It is not a race to perfection. The first thing that you must master is making yourself understood. You must communicate your message to the person you are conversing with. Even if you can’t get a hold of the right verb tenses, as long as you have a point to stress, you can always go back and get the grammar working. However, for starters, it is best to practice the basics before taking the next step to complex sentences.

There are many ways to learn Spanish. You just have to get something that works for your learning style. There are methods such as books, e-books, software programs, CD tutorials – the list goes on and on. Every beginner should keep an English-Spanish dictionary at hand. It is a good way to guide you on terms you wish to translate. Today, there are many pocket sized dictionaries for your convenience.

Audio tutorials can be very effective – you can listen to tutorials while driving or commuting. Downloading software for your mp3 player or ipod is a great idea. Taking advantage of technology is a very smart move when learning any new skill. Also consider software packages – they not only teach you the words but serve as mini games to practice your vocabulary.

Do not be intimidated by a new language. The best way to learn Spanish is to put some time and effort into it. Making it a daily routine will enhance your learning ability. Learning a new language is a good way to reinvent one self – you’ll be glad you did!

Homeschooling or Public Schooling

Friday, November 13th, 2009

When you look at academic achievements only, homeschooled children seem to advance quicker than their counterparts in public schools. A report published by the ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) shows that homeschool test scores were exceptionally high and well above that of public and private schools. They found that homeschool students in the 8th grade are four years ahead of their peers in public or private schools.

In a study conducted by Dr. Lawrence Rudner, he discovered that learners who were being homeschooled their entire school career, achieved the highest out of all the children.

Interesting information that came from this research was the difference that homeschooling made to the achievements of different race groups. There was very little difference found between the scores of white, black and Hispanic children in homeschooling. On the other hand, there was a significant difference between the achievements of different race groups attending public schools. Eight grade public school learners scored on average at the 58th percentile in math, where black children scored at the 24th percentile. White students scored at the 57th percentile in reading and Hispanic students at only the 28th percentile.

Dr. Ray, in his book, Strengths of Their Own, came to another interesting conclusion. The amount of money spend on tuition had no effect on the achievement of the child. In fact, the cheaper homeschooling option had better results than the far more expensive public schooling. In his research, based on statistics from 1998, he found that a homeschooled child cost parents on average $546 compared to the $5 325 for a public school learner. The average score for the homeschooled child was at the 85th percentile, where the score for the public school learner was averaged at the 50th percentile.

These research studies were done in a number of the states and in all the results the findings were the same. The homeschooled child scored on average 20-25 percentile points higher than their counterparts in public schools.

Future Trend Shopping with Voice Interactive Shopping Carts

Monday, November 9th, 2009

In the future our shopping carts at the grocery store will not be similar to the ones you see today. In fact, your shopping cart will know where every item in the store is, and it will probably have a laser pointing device that points to this section of whatever it was that you asked for last.

Luckily, it will be voice interactive, and contain speech recognition software. You can ask the cart about any given product such as the number of calories, number of grams of fat, or if it contains something you don’t want such as an artificial sweetener, or perhaps gluten.

Best of all, you won’t have to worry about Swine Flu season, because the future shopping cart will be coated with a special chemical or titanium dioxide, which will kill the germs. Your cart will also tell you which checkout line will go the fastest space on a probability scale, based on a quick calculation of the number of items of the person currently checking out, the number of people in line, and the speed and efficiency of that particular checker.

Your shopping cart will also alert you if you left an item inside of it before returning it to the cart collection area in the parking lot. It would be impossible at that point to leave anything inside the cart. The cart will also advise you that it must be put into the parking lot cart pin, and not left in the middle of the parking lot.

The Strategies for Winning a Scholarship

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Winning scholarship needs strategy. The students that win the most scholarships may not have more positive qualities than you, but they use some strategies to get noticed by the scholarship committees. Try to do some searching to get scholarship information. Apply for Scholarships that does not sell your information and keeps your information private.

Here are some tips to help give you a winning way with words: It talks about searching for scholarships, getting organized, advanced preparation, writing winning essays, getting good letters of recommendation, and acing the scholarship interview. Most scholarship sponsors receive so many qualified applications that they do not have the time to consider applications that fail to satisfy the requirements. You may be a wonderful and talented person, but if your application is not qualified, the selection committee is not going to look at it.

Just prepare recommendation letters from your teacher or your guidance counselors. You also should prepare a copy of your transcript. Write an essay about your aims and what you have done to date to accomplish them. Write about thing that makes you unique. You also should prepare your picture.

Try hard to make an essay that makes you noticed. Even if you think you understand the English language, your essay writing should be analyzed by someone who has knowledge in it. You should ask your teacher to evaluate your essay or think using an essay editing service.

If you want to win scholarship, you should think it seriously. You should remember the deadline and pay attention carefully to all requirements. To have great ideas about essay you can brainstorm ideas. Pay attention to the quantity, not the quality of ideas in your essay. Do your research and organize your notes. You may develop your essay with the donor in mind.

This does not mean to incline your views to curry favor with the adjudicators. It just means to remember the donating entity’s idea and individuality when drafting your essay. Look to the past of the group or any person with whom it is connected to potential material, for example anecdotes or quotes.

The Steps to Scholarly Success

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

The key to maximizing your study time is to manage this as efficiently and effectively as you can. Since we only have so many hours in a day to use, it is essential that you plan how to manage this valuable resource. Get the most out of your time spent on studying by organizing your day. Shortening travel time, being productive while waiting in lines or commuting, and designating specific time and days for errands can all contribute to maximizing your time and allowing you to have more time to study. Set your goals and create a schedule that will help you to work towards your goals.

1 – Develop a Schedule and Stick To It

Work your class schedule into a calendar and strategize what you will do for each class. Always have the calendar handy and mark all the submission dates for projects, homework, and examinations and add all other relevant information. You can prioritize from this point on what needs to be done first and determine periods of time you can allocate for specific activities to meet the deadlines. You can make a study schedule flexible but still stay committed to it.

2 – Eliminate Distractions

While a key to successful study skills is planning and organizing time, another key is the best environment to study. Everyone has their own preferences in choosing study spaces that work for them. Ideally, any quite place is conducive to studying and would enhance your comprehension. Simply because there will be no environmental stimulants (or distractions like cell phones, TV or music) to divert you from studying. Otherwise, you can just find a place where you feel comfortable studying so as not to waste precious time. Organize or de-clutter your study environment as well so it is easy to find the materials you need in studying.

3 – Stay Focused

Maintain your concentration during class. Refrain from allowing your mind to wander and getting distracted. Staying focused will enable you to retain all the important information given out during lectures and discussions. In the process you can also learn how to take better notes. Note taking is an important part of the learning process. It helps your mind retain the needed information as well as providing better understanding of the subject materials provided to you.

4 – Study the Hardest Subjects First

It may seem best to start out studying what is relatively easy and saving the difficult subject for last since the latter is more exhausting to do. However, to maximize your study time you should tackle the hardest subject first. The reason is that it will be easier to absorb difficult information when you’re mentally at your best. If you get the tough subjects out of the way first, you know you can breeze through the remaining easier subjects. In this process, you’re likely to accomplish more and stick to your study schedule.

5 – Attend Class

Attend classes and do your homework. While it seems like simple advice, you would be amazed at how many students get into the habit of skipping classes and trying to absorb all of the information from textbooks. Homework will serve as your guide to future exams. If you regularly do your assignments, you will retain the important concepts and principles in your mind and reviewing for future tests will not be too hard. Also try to review your notes after class to keep the content fresh in your mind. On most occasions, studying a few hours on a daily basis is more effective and less time-consuming than a frenzied cram session before a test.

6 – Take Study Breaks

A study break of 10 minutes for every hour or so that you spend studying is beneficial. The purpose of a study break is to allow your mind to absorb and process the block of information you have just learned before proceeding to the next. There will also be times when you have to do some marathon study sessions. During these times it is crucial that you take breaks. Continuous long periods of study at these sessions can burn you out which will make the time you are spending studying less effective. Remember the way you spend hour study breaks are important and how you spend your study breaks will affect your overall study time.
