Effectively Strategies in Transitioning to College

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Important factors to succeed in college greatly depend on your maturity level, capability to handle your independence and manage your time effectively. The sooner you can adapt to changes and convert the pressures into challenges, the easier you can be on your track to succeed.

There a few pointers that will help you effectively handle your transition to college.

1) Set your mind on your Purpose

Your primary goal as to why you’re in college is to earn a degree. As your priority you have to direct all your plans and strategies towards achieving this purpose.

Do not be disoriented by the immense freedom you are experiencing, instead develop a sense of independence and take responsibility for yourself. It is crucial that you learn self discipline and independence management in college to hurdle the obstacles you will encounter.

2) Be organized

Develop an organization system that works for you. Make a calendar book, file researches and reports, sort and label your materials, use file cards, etc. to organize your stuff. This system will minimize the clutter in your room and you won’t waste time finding something you immediately need.

3) Schedule

Be vigilant in making good use of your time. Classes in college offers more flexibility compared with high school classes, which are structured. You can choose the time and subjects you want. Create a schedule that suits you (for example, do not take morning classes if you perform less in the mornings or, contrariwise, schedule math courses in the morning if that is when you are at the peak of your performance). Put yourself on a schedule that maximizes your priorities and helps you use your time efficiently. Maintain a planner and try to balance academics and your social life. The best value you can get out of your college experience is maybe an 80/20 ratio of studies and social life.

4) Go to class

Develop the commitment to attend your classes. This also allows you to stay current at class work. The temptation to skip class is great since lectures and resources can be accessed online. But remember, nothing replaces being in the classroom. Your professors can enlighten you more on the materials on hand or have an opportunity to pursue an inquiry on the subject. You can take thorough notes, interact and find acquaintances from which you can find a reliable classmate who can lend her notes to you when you need them.

5) Study!

Take your studies seriously as this is your principal tool to succeed in college. Getting their first grades in college sometimes come as shock. If you have earned good points in high school on homework and participation, you will be surprised to find that in college exams or writing assignments comprise the largest part of your grade. In high school, “effort counts” while in college (as in real life), “results count”. To read and understand substantial amounts of assigned materials, lectures, and assignments covers the bulk of your time in school. Read your notes regularly and aim to develop new study habits.

6) Get help when you need it

If you are struggling in a particular subject or class, immediately ask for help. Instructors are usually open and helpful but you have to initiate the contact if you need any assistance. From the start the term, know your professor’s office location and office hours. It is essential to establish a rapport with your professors for you may need his assistance on his class or on other matters that may concern you.

7) Be involved

Get involved and meet people. There are a variety of extracurricular activities that you can join in college – organizations, club, band, study groups, or sports. Social involvements not only build relationships but may even help you manage your time effectively. Sometimes, your best college buddies become your friends for life.

Understanding Stars through Astronomy

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

For centuries man has rediscovered himself and the world around him by gazing at the stars. It is almost as if man had an intuitive feel about the vastness of knowledge that is stored within these stars. Gradually as more and more familiarity evolved and mankind started on a path of discovery of the hidden knowledge of these shiny sparkles of light through the science of Astronomy.

Through the science of Astronomy we can know more about the process of the creation of the stars as well as the history of the universe. Through the various sophisticated processes that are involved in the science of astronomy, we can also measure the distance of separation of one star from the other as well as forecast the time when they will be destroyed.

As mankind learned more about the stars through Astronomy and its allied sciences, the use of imagination was merged with this newly gained knowledge through which we could also visualize shapes and characters in the various groups of stars. We named them in accordance with these characteristics and termed them to be scientifically as constellations. This was the perfect blend of the science and the arts and allowed us to become even more involved in this process of getting to know more about our celestial neighbors.

The science of Astronomy also allows us to gain enough knowledge about the stars through which we can differentiate between stars and celestial bodies which are not starts. Through this knowledge we can also identify other stars, even though visually they may look different. An example of this can be the Sun. though visually very different from a normal star, yet the Sun has been proved to be, beyond a doubt, a star… through the study of Astronomy.

Wildlife of The Rocky Mountains in Canada

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The Rocky Mountains provide some of the best wildlife watching opportunities in Canada, if not North America. For many people spotting wildlife can be the highlight of their trip. Whether it’s a grazing elk, a whistling marmot or a black bear playing with it’s cubs, you are sure to stumble across many wild creatures.

Hoary Marmot; Also known as ‘Whistlers’ because of the shrill, whistle-like noise they make. They are photo-friendly creatures who live high in the alpine.

Spot them: High mountain trails; often at the top of the Jasper Tramway on Whistlers mountain.

Bighorn Sheep; Appropriately named because their horns are huge, they are often used as a symbol of the Rocky Mountains. They can be found throughout the Canadian Rockies, in all the National Parks.

Spot them: On Yellowhead Highway east of of the town of Jasper, the north end of Jasper Lake, and Lake Minnewanka Road.

Mountain Goat; This stocky goat has a shaggy white coat and a rather cute ‘beard’. They are probably about as close as it gets to an all-Canadian animal. You might need to look up to see them though, because they prefer the more mountainous areas, especially cliffs or steep slopes.

Spot them: Along the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper.

Bears; Grizzly bears (or brown bears as they are sometimes known) are probably the most notorious of all animals in the Rockies. They are recognisable by the large hump at their shoulders, although you probably won’t want to get close enough to notice it.

Black bears tend to be smaller in size and are much more common. To make things confusing they too are often brown in colour. Spotting either one in the wild is a memorable experience. Keep your eyed open and stay back!

Spot them: Along the Banff-Radium Highway, especially between Dolly Varden Picnic area and Mount Harkin Viewpoint and along the Icefields Parkway in infamous ‘bear jams’.

Moose & Elk; Recognisable by their enormous antlers and bulbous nose, moose are usually quite timid animals. During mating season (October – November) they can become more aggressive, and you may hear them making a very loud, peculiar bellow as they try to attract a mate.

Elk are quite a common sight in the Rockies and they often seem fairly tame as they graze nonchalantly by the roadside. It’s worth giving them a wide berth though, especially during the mating season (fall) because they have been known to attack.

Electrician Trade School

Friday, December 18th, 2009

If you are like many people, the recent worldwide economic crisis has you a little nervous about your personal economy. You want to find a career that will have you in demand and always working. You want to know that you will be able to find work and actually thrive in tough times and always have a job or be able to find one. Maybe the idea of opening your own business is appealing to you. These are all things that electricians have, because proper wiring in homes, businesses and schools is always an essential. You will always have work.

The first step in becoming a high earning, working electrician is to go to electrician trade school. You will learn all the ins and outs of electricity and how to handle it, but you will also be on your way to becoming certified, which will allow you to find work. This is usually only one step of your job training, but it is one of the most essential. Depending on where you live, you may need to obtain additional on the job training before you become certified to work on your own, but the time it takes to do this is well worth it for many.

So, now that you’re interested, how do you choose an electrician trade school? You need to choose one that will help you to be trained in the area you want to specialize in. For instance, if you would like to do commercial electricity, then you should choose a school that focuses on that area of the field. When you’ve chosen your area of expertise, it will become much easier to choose a school.

Does the electrician trade school you’re considering have a comprehensive curriculum? You will not only need to learn about electricity, but you will need to know how to read blue prints, as well. You will need to know the safety issues behind working with electricity and you will need to know how to make wiring safe so that it will not cause a fire.

Also, when you’re considering an electrician trade school, choose one that offers job placement into an apprenticeship program. This way, you won’t have to search for a job fresh out of school. Instead, if your electrician trade school offers job placement, you will be able to begin using your newly obtained skills right away.

Urban Disaster Survival

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Andrew, Northridge, Katrina, and now Haiti. All of these now spell natural disasters of monumental proportions. Even now desperately poor people languish in a county without good infrastructure during the best of times. Relief and foreign governmental agencies are currently rushing to get to the affected areas in hopes of saving lives and preventing an outbreak of disease (such as cholera). It took the U.S. FEMA roughly 96 hours to start working in the area of New Orleans Louisiana prior to this there had been little or no relief to the victims of Katrina.

During this period of time there was no clean water; there was no electricity; there was little suitable shelter; and for the most part there was no policing. These events occurred in The United States where the basic infrastructure and governmental ability far surpass that of Haiti and many other countries in this world. On the radio there were reports of some relief aircraft looking suitable for aircraft landings. Meanwhile, people huddle in the street as there are no houses to return to or they are in fear of returning into their homes. It will probably take a day for the first stages of relief to arrive and up to a week to really get things started. For the time being the people of Haiti have no relief or help they have to depend on themselves.

It is important for basic survival that folks have five things: clean water, food, shelter, protection, and basic first aid care. Man can go without a meal for a couple of weeks, but he can only go for about a day depending of course on the weather conditions, before he starts to have problems. In a disaster survival situation clean water can rapidly become contaminated or disappear altogether. Water borne illness such as cholera and dysentery quickly flare up as water becomes contaminated with untreated sewage and God knows what. Even the relatively mild symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea will quickly dehydrate and at the very least incapacitate a victim.

These problems can be overcome relatively easily by making two preparations. First, store clean water before hand and cycle it frequently. Store one and a half gallons of water per person per day to be used for cooking, cleaning, drinking, and brushing the teeth. You can never store enough water. Second, have ways to purify water. You may have access to water of questionable purity and quality that will have to be dealt with appropriately. Three things should be packed in order to prepare for this sort of water, iodine purification tablets, one can also use about a cap full of unscented bleach, a portable hand purification pump and a source of fire. Try not to get water from out of the gutter or directly downstream from the local waste treatment plant or chemical plant. Collect it into a large, fire proof container and place it over some flames.

The Medicine and Nuclear Science

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Hal Anger, a nuclear scientist, was the man who invented the gamma camera. Is a medical device, a camera, that is used to look at the internal organs and how they are functioning at the time. He invented it back in the 1950′s and it is still around today, nearly 70 years later.

The gamma camera works by through gamma rays. The patient is given a solution to drink or injected with a solution that contains a low level of radiation that will emit gamma rays. Depending on the organ that is being target to be looked at, a different type of solution is given. The reason for this is because certain types and mixes of the solution will be absorbed by different organs.

Once the solution is in the patient, they are then put under the gamma camera. The first part of the camera to receive the gamma rays coming from the patient is a part called a collimator. Like a colander that strains liquid from the solid, the nuclear medicine collimator on the gamma camera channels all of the gamma rays into the camera head that is full of crystals. What happens from there and how that becomes an image that you can see and make a diagnosis from is some complicated nuclear science stuff that most people do not understand anyways.

All that really matters for most of us is that it works. In particular, because since its invention, the largest success story of the gamma camera is that of the fight against breast cancer. It has been able to detect tumors much sooner, making the odds of survival in breast cancer patients much higher.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

A simple overview of the CBT Model: Generally an integrative multisystem model which is used by the cognitive behavioral therapists to plan the treatments and conceptualize the patients. The assessment mainly is done based on the cognitive and behavioral observations. Apart from these, the social, biological, spiritual, interpersonal and some other factors are also taken into consideration.

Levels of Cognition:

Aaron Beck and his co-workers have put forth 3 levels of Cognition which are applicable to the Cognitive Behavioral Theory. They are:

1. Full Consciousness – This is a state in which the normal decisions are made with full alertness, attentiveness and responsiveness.

2. Automatic Thoughts – They are in contrast with the above mentioned cognition. They are more independent, self governing. They are often private and run swiftly in the everyday thinking. They are not so much carefully observed or taken care of. Automatic thoughts mainly depend on the state of ones mind. If depressed, the thoughts will be low, negative and ineffective.

3. Schemas – Also known as core beliefs, rank third and the deepest amongst all the levels for Cognitive Behavioral Theory. They are the templates or the fundamental guidelines for the information processing. They are formed by the numerous life experiences and other developmental influences. They are a common target of CBT interventions as they play an important role in behavioral coping strategies and regulating confidence.

Key Behavioral Theories: During the advancement of modern methods of CBT, the cognitive theories have been very well blended with the findings from the studied of behavioral concepts. Some of the findings from these researches are:

1. Behavioral Techniques are helpful in modifying depressive behavior, lack of interest, low energy and other lessening of psychomotor activities.

2. Behavioral interventions can be very helpful to patients to recover coping, problem solving and social skills. The behavioral interventions involve activities scheduling and other tasks.

3. For anxiety disorders, the exposure therapy and other such methods are beneficial and effective interventions.

Dream Analysis and Interpretation

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

The dreams you have during your sleep are full of symbols and allegories which are stories with hidden meanings. Most people just choose to ignore the contents of their dreams, but if you know what you are looking for you can learn many things.

Dream interpretation involves dissecting parts of your dream and working out what each piece means, then piecing together the parts to find the overall meanings.

There are different types of dreams with two main categories that they fit into. You have dreams that are generated from your physical body and mind and a second set that are sourced from your spirit guides. Each set have a different purpose and it is important to recognize the differences.

Dreams that come from your physical body are based around your functions and your survival in life. They deal with subjects that are linked to your physical well being. A good way of thinking about them, is to view them as a personal assistant or manager who keeps your mind and body organised for your general well being. Then the other group is the dreams that deal with mystical things and will help you with spiritual development and progress.

So why do we even get information during our sleep? Well during your sleep, your five senses and your ego, the controlling master are all suspended from activity. Your sixth sense then becomes active without the interference from the other senses. Your physical body and your spiritual self can work together to perform tasks to help you sort out your life.

Dreams that originate from the physical body revolve around food, health and psychology. Different types of foods can trigger strange dreams, but these are not worth interpreting as they are too influenced by the food itself. When it comes to your health, sometimes your body will use dreams to let you know what something is wrong with your lifestyle and you should change it. In terms of Psychology, stressful situations can cause our mind to have problems, so our subconscious can help sort things out.
